Personal Hygiene

Let's face it, on a ride like this "personal hygiene" is almost a misnomer--- a toothbrush was my only link to normal civilization for the duration of the ride. Showers were not available at all at Loudeac, and at the other controls only glacier-fed-ice-cold water was offered. The sole exception was Brest, where hot showers were available for something like $15 ff, including towel rental and shampoo. I took cold showers at Tinteniac and Mortagne, and then had to put back on my old, grungy bike clothes. Unpleasant as it sounds, I felt much better after the shower! Cold water shaving was also pretty unpleasant but still manageable--- the problem was finding a sink that you didn't have to simultaneously share with 20 other guys. In general, bathroom facilities were pretty disgusting. Clean indoor plumbing could be had in towns at bars or restaurants after buying some nominal item like a café.
