Food

Controle food: overall, it was pretty good! The standard format was that of a self-service cafeteria or "self"--- you usually had the obligatory chunk of baguette, and a choice of pre-made salads, pottage (soups), pre-made ham & cheese baguette-sandwiches, 2 or 3 hot entrees, and desert puddings or custards. Drinks included water, wine, beer, coke, and (occasionally) fruit juices. Surprisingly, coffee was NOT always available at Controles. We found it easier to get caffeinated while on the road, by stopping at a bar and ordering a café petit or café grande (usually $6 ff or $12 ff, respectively). At some of the larger Controles, a separate bar or "petit dejeuner" line was available where you could buy a pastry and coffee. At least two Controles offered an omelet bar, where they would cook you a made-to-order omelet (choices were limited to plain, cheese, ham, or ham & cheese).
